My husband, Derek and I were invited to go to Indonesia with CBCHB in 2001, Derek wasn’t particularly interested in going but he knew I was, so he agreed to go. By the end of that first trip Derek had a love for the Indonesian people.
It was on this trip that we first met Pak Kardi. We learned that he had been trying to reach out to the small community where he was living by paying for a few of the very poor children to go to school from his own money.
ABOUT US
Pak Kardi wanted to invite the parents for a parent workshop and a fun time for the children. Pat Cottrell and his wife Camilla spoke to the parents, being experts, with eleven children of their own.
At the end of that trip we talked about what a great idea Pak Kardi had and what a great need there was to make education available to children of economically under priviledged families. There are many poor that can not send their children to school even though they want to, since public education in Indonesia isn’t free. As a preschool teacher at the time this concept grabbed my heart.
So on October 11, 2004 we had our first planning meeting. Since that time Mercy International has grown to nine areas on Java, Bali and Sumatra with over one hundred fifty children.
